Ice Dams

There are many things which can cause a problem for flat roofing, and one of these is the occurrence of ‘ice dams’. Ice dams are exactly as they sound and are essential ‘blockades’ formed of water which block the flow of the rest of the water. These occur on flat roofing when heavy rain is followed by a very low temperature, which is also a common time for pot holes and other problems to occur.

Most flat roofing is not in fact completely flat but includes a slight tilt which drains water into the gutters. However with ice dams a wall of ice forms around the water before it gets to the edge and this then causes it to pool on the roof where it will gain weight and potentially put strain on the roof. Furthermore it can penetrate the roof and seep through causing a range of different moisture damage to your health and to your furniture and interior design (not to mention the structural integrity of your building). Fortunately there are ways to combat this effect with a membrane, sheet metal or tin roofing and other precautions. Speak to a commercial roofing service and they will help you to protect your building against ice dams.
